A beautiful failure

The central theme of "Three Day Blow" is the fragility and importance of human relationships, particularly the bonds of friendship. Throughout the story, Nick and Bill's friendship is portrayed as a powerful and meaningful connection that provides comfort, support, and understanding in the face of life's challenges. The story suggests that such friendships are vital to our emotional well-being and that they can help us navigate difficult times. However, the story also suggests that these relationships are fragile and can be lost or damaged, leaving us with a sense of sadness and loss. I attempted to pull on this fragility by placing the lives of each friend in two completely different spheres. Nick with a life of failure and abuse by his father, and Bill with a life of support and ease of oppurtunity from his. Ultimately, the story reminds us to cherish and value the relationships we have, and to recognize their importance in our lives.
This project was one that I initially made as a experiment. I wanted to test my ability to cast, and direct actors. This piece is slow and stationary, but the acting fills the screen with tension and emotion. Sometimes I wonder if it was too much tension, or if more movement would have complimented the actors in their performance. It was a Hemingway adaptation, so I feel like too much tension is forgivable. I consider this a failure of a film because I put too much energy into directing actors, and not enough in the production, which ultimately gives this piece a tense, but boring exterior. Editing this film became a valuable lesson in the process of what to do and not to do during production.

A Quote from Robert Altman

I want them to create something and not just hit marks and say words.
